What is a Large Language Model (LLM) Mesh?

A Large Language Model (LLM) Mesh is an integrated ecosystem of multiple LLMs that enables AI to be scaled successfully across the organization.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are specific machine learning models designed to perform a variety of natural language processing (NLP) and analysis tasks. They are the bedrock of AI deployments and are created by a variety of private and open-source players.

As organizations increasingly deploy multiple LLMs across the business and within different departments there is a danger that each of these will operate in isolation, with a lack of overall management and oversight. LLM Mesh provides an architecture to manage, integrate, and optimize the usage of multiple LLMs within an organization.

Within the LLM Mesh, each LLM can be optimized for specific tasks, data types, or performance needs, while balancing central control (for safety, security and performance), and decentralized operations for independence and innovation. This means that the LLM Mesh enables modular development and avoids organizations being locked into single LLM providers.

The LLM Mesh architecture is based on Data Mesh principles, including:

  • Data as a Product
  • Data infrastructure

In the same way LLM Mesh ensures that innovation at a local business unit level fits within corporate guidelines and standards, enabling reuse and the scaling of AI deployments based on specific needs.

 

What are the benefits of a Large Language Model (LLM) Mesh?

An LLM Mesh addresses the operational challenges that organizations face when scaling their deployment of multiple LLMs. The benefits include:

  • Improved specialization – rather than standardizing on a single LLM, different LLMs can be deployed, based on specific business needs. This is particularly important at a business unit level, enabling teams to pick the best LLM for their own requirements

  • Better reliability – if a specific LLM is offline or not working, requests can be automatically routed to another, ensuring fault tolerance
  • Greater scalability – additional LLMs can be easily added to the LLM Mesh, ensuring interoperability and scalability
  • Vendor independence – rather than relying on a single vendor or model, LLM Mesh provides choice and avoids lock-in. This is particularly important given the current rapid progress in AI innovation, with new models being introduced and improved on an ongoing basis

  •       Dynamic model selection and scaling, allowing routing to models to be based on specific factors, including price, availability and capabilities
  •       Unified management, simpler management through a unified API that spans the entire LLM ecosystem
